An Audience with the Emperors

The Four Emperors have always been a key element in the universe of One Piece. They're the four most notorious and fierce pirate captains in the world at any given point in time, and they're one of the Three Great Powers, the primary forces that assert control over the oceans, alongside the Marine Headquarters and the Seven Warlords of the Sea. Of course, the Four Emperors are also the main focus of the ninth major expansion of the One Piece Card Game, Emperors in the New World.

The set's 130 cards explore the state of affairs subsequent to the installation of the newest generation of Emperors, three of whom replaced previous members of this fearsome group of maritime swashbucklers. In fact, the specific composition of the Four Emperors have changed over the course of the events of One Piece, with the current lineup including the series's own protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy.

A World of Adventure

The formidable quartet of Emperors in the Luffy era, also featured as special super parallel cards with alternate artwork, include:

  • the Straw Hat himself, sporting the signature white hair caused by the Gear 5 form of his Devil Fruit–fueled rubber body;
  • the crazy clown and longtime antagonist Buggy;
  • the Red-Haired Shanks, who had been Buggy's own apprentice;
  • and the veteran Marshall D. Teach, better known as Blackbeard.

Beyond the Emperors

Among the highlights of the set are a few debuts either as character cards or leader cards. The most conspicuous of these is reserved to the man who went down in history as the greatest of all sailors, the one and only former Pirate King Gol D. Roger , here captured as a whopping 10-cost character card. It's almost unbelievable that the game took this long before giving the players the chance to field the great Gol D. Roger in any shape or form, considering he's the man who allegedly found One Piece, the fabled and to this day still unseen treasure that gave the series its title, thus beginning the Great Pirate Era. After such a long wait, though, he doesn't disappoint with his bombastic 13000 power plus the rush and blocker ability combo. Appearing for the first time as leaders, meanwhile, are the Sky Priestess Lim, a Straw Hat ally who's split into two bodies, and the mischievous archeologist/femme fatale Nico Robin.
